Just read an article on CNN:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/americas/09/29/amazon.rainforest.destruction.ap/index.html

What are some ways that deforestation can be stopped?

Shouldnt deforestation have a great impact on global warming because of the Carbon Dioxide that the trees consume?

I think we need to look at our rainforest especially as our biggest ally against climate change. Not to mention they are the very lungs of our planet. They should be one of our most valued assets.

We should pay countries/farmers who are clearing them for farms, so they don;t have to slash and burn for money.

Other than that, I can't imagine what else will stop the onslaught. No poor farmer is going to watch his family starve because us rich Americans/Europeans are concerned about the planet. Sadly, I think it will take paying people to stop it.

I think if we're going to continue to use paper products we should revisit hemp as a "renewable" source. Many more acres of trees are required to produce roughly the same amount of paper as an acre of hemp, and that acre can be harvested again next year!
Moreover, clothes, ropes, some foods, oils, etc. can be produced as well, and in some ways are better products.
